President’s Corner for April 2024

Hello fellow club members. I hope everyone is doing well as we move into spring. The weather has sure been nice but, but we all know what is coming. I’m not looking forward to the hot Summer. Oh well, we deal with it.

Speaking of nice weather, the club picnic and camp out is coming up on April 5th and 6th. People who wish to camp can start arriving at Usery Mountain Park on Friday the 5th. The club has paid for 10 camping spots and those are first come, first serve. At last count we had five people who say they are camping. Those camp site are for Friday and Saturday night. The club will be at the Cholla group camp site where we have been for the last few years.

The picnic will be held on Saturday at around noon and will be a catered lunch. The cost is $15 per person, and is not included with the prepaid camp spots. Everyone attending the picnic needs to bring $15 cash to be collected at the site. Try to bring exact change if you can. That sure will help with the folks attending.

I will not be there this year. Brenda and I have some good friends coming into town over that weekend and we will be camping in Bisbee. The camp out and picnic are a great place to come out hang with your fellow club members. And I will warn you now, if you are camping, be prepared to hear some great stories around the camp fire. There wil also be a lot of jokes told. Some are funny, some are baaaaad. Man, I wish I could be there. It’ll be lots of fun.

The Tech team is scheduled to be at the repeater sites on April 20th. This is the day we are going to install the full duplex system onto the repeaters.

The club also acquired a 48 foot tower from the Red Cross that we will put back up at the Stone Castle. It is the same or similar to the one that served the club for the last 45 years. We are not sure if it will be installed on the same day, as we need to have a base plate made and we need to arrange for how we are going to lift the tower into place.

There have been a few members asking if they can tour the repeater sites. If you wish to see the sites, the day we go out for these repairs would be a good time to come out. We will start work around 7am. If you wish to come out, send me an email so I can put you on the list of visitors. Send the email to president@azbdb.com. Let me know that you would like to see the sites on the day of the repairs. If you do come up, keep in mind that the Usery site requires four wheel drive to get to the top, so you will have to ride up with one of us.

The Tech committee did some work on the repeater controllers. I should say Dennis, KA0OBC did some work on the controllers. The controllers’ settings somehow got changed. We are pretty sure that is what was causing the repeaters to lock up. Thinking the cause was from the Allstarlink system, I removed it for a few days. After Dennis reset the controllers and fixed their scrambled brains, I put Allstar back online. We have not noticed any issues up to this point so I think Dennis fixed the problem.

I also updated the Echolink system and made some changes there. Let the Tech team know if you notice any issues with anything.

I hope everyone had a great Easter and I will catch you down the log. 73!

Steve, KB7KWK
